A Thiya Student form Mangalore Miss. Shruti gets admission to P.A. Engineering College, Mangalore for Telecommunications Engineering : by Anita Kuckian, Tulunadu News, Mangalore
Thanks to Ms. Chandravathi Vasant for the brilliant idea of educating the underprivileged students from Thiya Community only for higher education.
Thiya Welfare Association (TWA) initiated a fund raising programme after this brilliant idea struck Ms. Chandravathi Vasant – Chairperson, Cultural Committee of Thiya Welfare Association. The fund raising event was a grant success and top personalities from Mumbai were present where cheques were distributed to selected 4 underprivileged students of the Thiya community from Mangalore. These students were provided financial help to pursue higher education and professional education only. These shortlisted students were supported by providing college education fee, bus / travel fare, uniforms and books for the year 2010-11, by Thiya Welfare Association, Education Committee in a function held at Karnataka Sangha, Mumbai.
One of the thiya student Miss. Shruti from Kukkaje was also the beneficiary of this educational fund support has scored 82% in X Std & 63% in XII Std. She is now eligible for an Engineering seat in P.A. Engineering College, Mudipu, Mangalore. Ms. Chandravathi Vasant and the TWA President Mr. Roopesh Y. Rao personally visited and met the P.A. Engineering College Management, perused the admission procedure and managed to get a discounted fee and installments for the fee payment. Shruti was very delighted and added “I was looking forward for an Engineering career ever since I was young. I never thought this would happen so easily and my community is helping me in perusing my dream come true. I will never forget this kind and noble gesture and will repay back everything to my Thiya community after I become an Telecom Engineer”.
Ms. Chandravathi Vasant said “Providing Thiya community students with scholarship between Rs. 500 – 1000, does not fit my conscience, instead, we should help them get fully educated OR do not provide any help. These scholarship kind of funds does not even take care of their bus fare.”
Ms Vasant is of the opinion that “instead of supporting 50 students with Rs.500 as scholarship, support only one needy child for their higher education as they tend to take up petty, low paying odd jobs after their XII grade and end up not even completing their graduation. This is the basic reason that majority our community members are uneducated or does not even hold a minimum qualification of Graduation”.
The concept was well adapted and digested by Thiya Welfare Association and they organised a fund raising event for supporting the underprivileged students from Thiya community. Immediately an Education Sub Committee was formed under the able Chairmanship of Shri. Lazar T. Kotian and an exercise was initiated to identify these underprivileged students form Thiya community . Shri Kotian has been with UNICEF (United Nations International Children Education Fund) for last 35 years and has been working with UNICEF for their projects all over the world. Shri Lazar T. Kotian brings with him, vast experience of analytical skills in providing funds to underprivileged Children Education.
Mr. Rao added “Shruti is a smart brilliant student and has scored sufficiently well to grab the seat for Telecom Engineering. I am myself in the Media, Entertainment & Telecom Industry since last 22 years and the Telecom Industry has great scope with Department of Telecom (DoT) opening up the telecom spectrum to private companies.”
